Last year I was on a French Country grain stripe kick. You may remember these bookcases I painted for our living room.
Well, I fell in love with the bookcases and with the stripes and so when I came across a set of vintage Ethan Allen TV trays I thought I would paint them to match.
I know! I know! I’m generally not a matchy matchy type of girl, but common sense was overruled by my heart at the time and so matchy matchy it would be.
This is how they started out. Well worn with scratches and gouges. I sanded them and then painted four coats of Dove White paint from Home Depot. Yes, you heard me right. That was FOUR coats of paint. Can I say I highly recommend spray paint when it comes to something like this???
Lots of work, but they did turn out pretty!
Next, I had my husband tape off lines for my French Linen grain sack stripes. I recommend using the green painter’s tape because it has a better seal and won’t let paint leak underneath. I painted a couple of coats of Blue Grey Slate for my stripes. After the stripes had dried I removed the painter’s tape.
At this point I distressed each table using coarse sand paper in order to get through all those layers of paint.
After sanding I used black latex paint for the French typography stencil I had purchased off of Etsy. I lightly sanded over the stencil once it had dried.
In hindsight I would have distressed the blue stripes more or would have used one coat of paint instead of two so that the stencil would have stood out more, but all in all, I was happy with the finished results.
The TV tray stand was painted Blue Grey Slate and was distressed to match the tray tables.
I used Varathane’s Matte Finish to seal the paint.
I love TV tray tables because they are so versatile. I’ve used these cute little tables as end tables, as well as TV tray tables, and they look just as cute sitting in the corner of the room waiting to be used!
By the way, this project was done with latex paint.
