Bookshelves. Don’t ya just love them?
Our old house had two rooms with built-in, floor to ceiling bookshelves and oh how I miss them! I loved having plenty of space to house my books and to display family pictures, running medals, and souvenirs we had picked up on trips. I now make do with my French linen striped bookcases and a freshly painted china cabinet that I’ve decided to keep.
The displays on each end are kept simple, but behind the closed doors are oodles and oodles of books, medals, and vintage glassware.
Here’s a sneak peak at the china cabinet that I’ve been working on. The paint was provided by General Finishes. Don’t you just love that navy blue? It makes my heart sing. House of Antique Hardware is supplying hand-antiqued hardware. I assumed it was antiqued by a machine but it’s not. The hardware should be here next week and then I’ll do the big reveal and I can’t wait! This piece is gorgeous if I do say so myself.
My new china cabinet holds the yellow McCoy pottery that belonged to both of my grandmothers and the old books were a gift from my father-in-law. I kept the display simple because the doors on the china cabinet have beautiful millwork which makes it difficult to see a busier display.
I love displaying bits and pieces of my grandparents’ past. It means so much to me to be able to see and touch what they once touched themselves. I highly recommend pulling those old treasures out of storage and showing them off. Those old, sentimental things are meant to be used and enjoyed. You’ll be glad you did!
Bookcase Styling By The Pros
Here are some of my favorite bookshelves I found on Pinterest, but more importantly I enjoyed the articles from which they came. I hope you’ll take the time to check out the articles. There’s lots and lots of great interior design pictures in them.
Anita at Cedar Hill Farmhouse has a very insightful article on how a professional stylist rearranged her bookcase below for a photoshoot. As you can see, books were turned backwards for a monochromatic look. My inner bookworm protests at this idea, but on the other hand, I do enjoy the calming effect it has.
Liz at Love Grows Wild shared this bookcase in her office makeover. I like the simplicity of the design and the different textures incorporated to add visual appeal. Her office boasts a French Provincial china cabinet for office storage and a farmhouse table as a desk.
Home Bunch Interior Design Ideas I apologize now for all of the time you’ll spend on Home Bunch’s article. Wow. Just wow. There are lots and lots of gorgeous home design pictures in this one. I promise there is a bookcase hidden in their pictures somewhere and it’s well worth the time it takes to find it. Hope you’ll enjoy their article as much as I did!
Classic Chic Home gives tips on how to style different types of bookcases and the reasoning behind it.
Greige Design This is one of my favorite pictures on Pinterest and so I thought I would include it. I love the old tarnished dome lids and the texture and color of the baskets. I find it quite soothing and easy on the eyes.
So, what’s your style? Do you love bold and colorful displays or the soothing neutrals?
